Royal Canadian Marine Search and Rescue, Station 106 Shuswap Lake

Recently a SWOA Board member reached out to Rob Sutherland, Station Leader for Royal Canadian Marine Search and Rescue, Station 106 Shuswap Lake. We have created some links for our members to follow the news of what our Rescue Boats are doing and the services provided by this exceptional group of volunteers.

Some highlights include:

  • Station 106 is the first and still the only RCMSAR base established on inland waters in BC
  • Stats for 2022, which marks 10 years of service on Shuswap and Mara Lakes; 28 volunteers, 20 missions, saved 5 lives, assisted in 9 others, 4447 volunteer hours. This adds to the 10 year total of 385 lives saved and 237 assists.
  • Both Rescue vessels now have the same high tech navigation systems
  • Construction has started on the new boat house for these vessels in Sicamous
  • Federal grant funding should support hiring 2 summer students to assist with Safe Boating education and work alongside a similar program for Clean, Drain, Dry Invasive Species Prevention Education Program at boat launches on our lakes this summer

  • Maintain 18 Kids Don’t Float PDF loaner Kiosks as well as 17 Life Ring Stations on our lakes
  • ‘Bobby the Safety Boat’ visits Grades 2 & 3 students at Shuswap schools
