Highway #1 Construction Work

Update Sept 2026

Several major projects are still underway along the TransCanada Highway that may affect Thanksgivings travel plans for SWOA members.

The Selkirk project adjoins to the eastern end of the recently widened Quartz Creek Bridge. This project is ongoing and includes 4 kilometers of four laning. The work involves extensive excavation and grade building and a good deal of heavy equipment movement. Minor delays should be expected Monday through Saturday.

The Jumping Creek to MacDonald Snowshed project is well underway. The project "involves the design and construction of improvements to 2.6 km of the Trans-Canada Highway 1 approximately 40 kilometres east of Revelstoke, including rockfall and avalanche mitigation, climate change resiliency and median divider and roadside barrier." Minor weekday and Saturday delays are expected, as there are extensive blasting and debris movement ongoing. Caution is urged as the are several poorly marked lane changes evident.

The Bruhn Bridge building continues at a good pace, however the weekday and Saturday travel times are again restricted. Open periods with two way traffic are from 6AM to 9AM and 3PM to 8PM. Detouring via Highway 97 will be required from 9AM until 3PM Monday through Saturday. Single lane alternating traffic is required from 8PM until 6AM most days. The detour may add as much as 45 minutes to travel times depending on the volume of truck traffic. At the time of writing there is no indication that the bridge will be open over the Thanksgivings Day long weekend. Please check closer to Thanksgivings weekend on DriveBC (https://www.drivebc.ca/). The good news is that the Bruhn Bridge construction work is on schedule for full completion by the fall 2027.

Safe travels.
