May 2026
The good news is that much progress has been made in upgrading HYW #1.
Construction of the four-laning through Chase has been completed, along with a new elevated interchange at Brooke Drive. This work will aid both through traffic on Hyw#1 and access in a safer manner to shopping in Chase.
The Ford Road to Tappen four-laneing and bridge rebuild has also been nearly finished. Some rock material removal is still taking place at the east end of the project. There should be no traffic interruption from this work. Access to the Co-Op gas station is now via the Sunnybrae Road exit. Access to the Tappen ESSO is still right off HWY #1.
Another scheduled project, the Salmon Arm West HWY 1 four-laneing (10th Ave. SW to 10St SW) is scheduled to start again this summer. This part of the work will widen the road from two to four lanes plus a shoulder.
This final phase of the Salmon Arm West four-laneing project is expected to begin construction in summer 2026 (exact date not known), with resurfacing of the entire HWY#1 corridor in Salmon Arm planned for 2027. Delays can be expected while this work goes on. Detours are possible onto 10th Ave SW.
The Bruhn Bridge replacement in Sicamous remains as a major traffic disruption. Although much work has been completed the new bridge won't be fully open until fall 2027. Generally the bridge is open weekends and holidays through the summer, and from 6 to 9AM and 3 to 8 PM weekdays. The detour via Enderby takes about 45 minutes because of the heavy truck traffic. Another busy work area is the Jumping Creek to MacDonald Snowshed Project. This project is about 40 Km east of Revelstoke and involves rockfall and avalanche mitigation, climate change resiliency and median divider and roadside barrier work. Generally this project is open on weekends and does single lane alternating traffic at other times. Click here for a closure schedule.
The Selkirk Project adjoins to the east the recently widened Quartz Creek bridge project. This project includes four-laneing 3.9 km of highway, two wildlife crossings, wildlife exclusion fencing, and construction of a new rest area. Single-lane-alternating traffic will occur 24/7 for six weeks beginning May 4, 2026. Occasional random minor 5-10 min all-lane stoppages may be required throughout the summer.
As always it is recommended that you check Drive BC before heading out. This information source is generally up to date but it is also prudent to click here for information on Highway 1 - Kamloops to Alberta - Four Laneing
Have a happy and safe summer.
